How many solar panels for an RV?

The 12V loads that add up to 2,000 Wh

A travel trailer or motorhome carries more of everything: two fans, a bigger fridge, a second person's devices, and a TV that actually gets used. That pushes the daily draw up and the panel count with it, but the roof has room the count needs.

Each figure is a watt draw times the hours the load truly runs, not the hours it is switched on. The compressor fridge cycles on and off; the fan idles on low; lights are an evening thing. That gap between switched-on and actually-drawing is where most online RV numbers go wrong.

Travel changes your sun figure more than a house ever does. A summer in the Southwest is a 6.5-hour climate; a winter parked in the Pacific Northwest is closer to 3. Size for the darkest place you plan to sit still in, not the sunniest place you drive through.

Roof space is the real limit

An RV roof looks huge until you climb up. The air-conditioner shroud, the plumbing vents, a TV antenna, the ladder, and the awning arm all carve out the clear runs, and panels have to clear the AC shadow to earn their rating. Measure the unbroken stretches before you count on the full number; a 200W panel needs a run about four feet long with nothing shading it.

6 100-watt panels take about 32 sq ft of clear roof (three 200W panels land close to the same footprint). That is the ceiling most rigs hit first: not the math, the metal. If the roof will not hold the count, the fix is fewer, thirstier days or a bigger battery to ride the shortfall, not a panel that will not fit.

Sizing, not wiring. This page counts panels. Between the array and the battery sits a charge controller (MPPT models harvest more of the panels' extra voltage than simpler PWM ones at this size), plus fuses, a disconnect, and correctly sized wire for real DC current. That hookup is careful-DIY or an installer's job, not a step to eyeball. Take the watt and watt-hour figures to whoever wires the bus.

The battery is the other half
